Lady Cats win final two GVC games - PHOTO GALLERY

    The Cuba High School varsity Lady Wildcats closed out their regular season last week with a pair of Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) wins over Vienna and Bourbon. The girls are playing in the district tournament this week.


    The Lady Cats hosted Vienna on February 17 and took both games from the Eagles. The varsity won 78-45 after the JV had taken an 18-8 two-quarter game.
    Cuba led all the way in the varsity game. The Lady Wildcats went up 20-11 in the first quarter and took a 41-25 lead at the half. It was 63-36 at the close of the third quarter before Cuba won by 35 points.
    Seniors Jenell Light and Audrey Williams led Cuba on senior night. Light hit six three-point shots and scored 28 points, while Williams scored 16. Abby Peterson added 15, Kiyah Bast six, Jayda Mercer, Diamond Payne and Elizabeth Fieser three points each, and Sophia Horsefield and Eden Lappe two each.
    In the JV game, Cuba led 14-4 after the first quarter before winning 18-8. Mercer scored six, Peterson five, Allie Gaston three, and Horsefield and Addie Smith two each.
    The Lady Wildcats closed out the regular season in Bourbon on February 18.
    Cuba dominated the varsity game, taking a 17-8 lead in the opening quarter and leading 34-12 at the break. It was 47-16 at the end of the third and the Lady Cats went on to win 52-17.
    Peterson led Cuba with 17 points, while Bast scored 13. Payne added six, Williams five, Mercer and Light four each, and Gaston three.
    In another two-quarter game for the JV, the Lady Cats led Bourbon 15-2 after the first quarter and won the game 31-3. Gaston, Peterson, and Payne each scored seven, Smith and Lappe four each, and Mercer two. The JV finished the season with a record of 9-5.
    “I was really pleased with the effort and energy we brought every night,” said JV Coach Randy Bouse. “I’m proud of the growth I saw in each one of these girls and appreciate the hard work and commitment they put into this season.”
    The varsity finished the regular season with a record of 13-13. Steelville won the GVC championship with a record of 5-0, while Cuba was second at 4-1. Belle was 3-2, Vienna 2-3, Viburnum 1-4, and Bourbon 0-5.
