SHS boys and girls will play in district championship games

The Steelville High School boys and girls basketball teams will both be playing for a district championship on Friday. The Cardinals and Lady Cardinals each entered the Class 3 District 3 tourney, which is being held in Herculaneum this week, as the number-one seeds.

After the first round of the tournament, three of the six Gasconade Valley Conference teams in the tourney advanced to the semifinals. The girls opened play on Saturday, while the boys played their opening-round games on Monday.
The Cuba and Steelville girls both won their first games, while Bourbon lost. Play began on Saturday with third-seeded Grandview beating sixth-seeded Jefferson 55-24 and second-seeded Herculaneum defeating seventh-seeded Kingston 69-37. Herculaneum and Grandview played in the semifinals on Tuesday, with Grandview getting the upset victory 68-55.
On the other half of the girls bracket, fifth-seeded Cuba scored the only upset of the first round with a 52-47 victory over fourth-seeded St. Pius X. In the final game of the day, top-seeded Steelville beat eighth-seeded Bourbon 49-17. Steelville and Cuba met in the other semifinal game Tuesday and the Lady Cards came out on top 53-42.
Steelville and Grandview will play for the girls championship at 6 p.m. Friday. The Lady Cardinals defeated Grandview 47-40 in early December at Grandview.
Steelville was the only GVC boys team to win in the first round. Cuba lost to a higher seeded team, while Bourbon suffered the only upset on the first day of play for the boys.
On Monday, third-seeded Jefferson defeated sixth-seeded Kingston 56-24 to open boys play and then second-seeded St. Pius X beat seventh-seeded Cuba 65-41. Jefferson and St. Pius X played in the semifinals Wednesday and St. Pius X won 71-54
In the final two games of the night, fourth-seeded Bourbon was defeated by fifth-seeded Herculaneum 62-46, and top-seeded Steelville got past eighth-seeded Grandview 61-25. Steelville and Herculaneum met in the other boys semifinal Wednesday and the Cardinals won 79-44
The Cardinals and St. Pius X will play for the boys championship at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
If they can capture the district titles, the SHS teams will take on the Class 3 District 4 tournament winner in Rolla on Wednesday, March 4, at Missouri S&T. The girls game would begin at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:45 p.m.
In the Class 3 District 4 title games, which are also being played on Friday, St. James will play Ava in the boys final and St. James will take on Licking for the girls championship. That tournament is being played at Mountain Grove.
