The James Memorial Public Library will hold its annual book sale from March 12 through March 14, offering residents a great chance to purchase new and used books at a low price. Sponsored by Friends of the Library, the annual sale allows the library to get rid of duplicate books to make room for new ones.
The sale will be held during regular hours of operation, 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday. Saturday will also provide a special day of the sale, with shoppers being allowed to fill a bag of books for only $1.
In the past, thousands of books have been sold from the collection, most due to duplications, wear and tear, or a to provide space for incoming books. Public libraries have book sales to update their collection and provide a great opportunity for book enthusiasts to get high quality books for a fraction of the price of buying new.
Some books come from donations the library cannot use. The bulk of the books for sale come from random donations including excess inventory from retail stores, schools that have discontinued libraries, and other organizations. Also, as people’s collection changes or expands, they often bring books they’ve already read to make room for new books. Many of these donations are repeats of what the library already has or are too old for circulation.
Library staff check every book brought in against the current collection and make the decision to keep it or let it go before books are put on sale. The book sale is an opportunity to clean out old books or to reorganize a personal collection.
Books from all genres will be represented in the sale including romance, mystery, religion, history, western, adult fiction, youth fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, and more.
The sale will be held in the Betty Lu Hughes room in the library and will include hundreds of hardbacks, paperbacks, CDs, and magazines on sale to the public.
All the money raised will be used to purchase subscriptions of magazines and online reading options, as well as bringing new soft and hardback books for patrons to experience. For more information, contact the James Memorial Public Library at 265-7211.
