School changes meal delivery days

Steelville Schools has changed the process of providing meals to local children this week. The same amount of food will be provided, but the delivery procedure will change in order to offer more safety during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Superintendent Mike Whittaker sent updated information to families via email April 3. It was also posted on the district Facebook page.

For the past two weeks, the district has offered grab-and-go meals and delivery of meals Monday through Thursday of each week. Students received a breakfast and lunch for each day, including Friday. Beginning this week, that process will change slightly. In an effort to limit contact with food service workers, volunteers packing the meals, and families, the district will now be providing meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Specific dates will be provided in the meal bags sent home on Tuesday.
Students will continue to receive the same amount of food; it will simply be delivered on those two days. Each child will receive two breakfasts and lunches on Tuesday, and three breakfasts and lunches on Thursdays. Menu boards are being posted on the district Facebook page.
Whittaker reported the district is currently serving 500 children each day with this food service program. The superintendent’s email also reminded parents the district is providing alternative methods of instruction for students through educational pages printed in the Steelville Star beginning with last week’s edition and continuing throughout the school closure.
Each week will include two pages in the paper to provide learning opportunities for children. Whittaker told parents, “It is important for you to engage with your children to complete these activities. We know that everyone is under a bit more stress right now. Please know that the Steelville R-3 School District understands, and we greatly appreciate you working with and spending more time with your children to continue their learning.”
If a family didn't receive a newspaper last week or would like to be added to the list for meals for a child or children, please call the superintendent’s office at 573-775-2175.
