The Steelville High School Alumni Association has announced that its 2020 annual banquet has been canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. There are no plans to reschedule the event, which would have been held at Steelville High School on June 27.
Members of the organizing committee met via email recently and all were in agreement this year’s banquet should be canceled out of concern for their fellow alumni members who were planning to attend.
“With the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, we just can’t justify even planning for such a large event until a vaccine is in place that would guarantee the safety of everyone who would be attending, especially when people from all over the country would be attending,” said Alumni Association President Rob Viehman. “We’ll plan on an even bigger get together next year, when we can honor this year’s and next year’s 50th reunion classes.”
The Alumni Association’s banquet is the group’s only fundraiser, with money being used to give scholarships to two Steelville High School graduates every year. The scholarships will still be given this year.
Anyone who would like to contribute to the association’s scholarship fund is encouraged to send a donation to Wanda Grayson, FCNB, PO Box 159, Steelville, MO 65565. Make all checks payable to the Steelville Alumni Association.
