Vertis Donald “Fritz” Johanning

  Vertis Donald “Fritz” Johanning of Leslie, Misosuri was born in Hooper, Nebraska on May 15, 1924 to Henry August and Amelia Hanna (Janssen) Johanning and passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at the age of 96 years.

    Fritz honorably served his country in the United State Navy from 1944-1946.
    On October 25, 1945 he married Hallie Lawrence.
    Fritz and Hallie lived in St. Louis, Missouri for a short time before moving to the farm on Evergreen Loop, Leslie, Missouri in 1953.
    Fritz was a hard worker and nearly always kept two jobs. He drove a school bus for Spring Bluff R-15, but his main vocation was as a rural mail carrier for the Leslie Post Office. He was employed by the Post Office from October 1, 1960 until he retired on November 30, 1984. Fritz loved to work on his farm and enjoyed spending time outdoors.
    Fritz was very athletic and played fast pitch softball well into his 60’s. His activities also included bowling for Mastin Tile and throwing horseshoes. He attended Evergreen Baptist Church in Leslie, Missouri.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Hallie Johanning; one granddaughter, Alicia Key; parents, Henry and Amelia Johanning; four brothers, Wilfred, Harry, Raymond and Delmar Johanning; and three sisters, Henrietta Danz, Lois Schollmeyer and Irma Thenhaus.
    He is survived by his children, Gary Johanning and wife Nancy of Sullivan, Missouri, Karen Head and husband Mark of Leslie, Missouri, Linda Clonts and husband Charlie of Sullivan, Missouri and Richard Johanning of Sullivan, Missouri; 15 grandchildren, Cindy Davis and husband Tim, Skip DcDermott and wife Lisa, Michelle Parks and husband Chris, all of Sullivan, Missouri, Monica Craft and husband Chris of Leslie, Missouri, Jarrod Head and wife Natalie, Bryan Head and wife Angela, Kristin Clonts and husband Corey, Briana Perry and husband Brad and Abbie Clonts, all of Sullivan, Missouri, Mollie Fancher and husband Bryan of Cuba, Missouri, Chad Clonts of Sullivan, Missouri, Kory Johanning and wife Lauren of Greensboro, North Carolina and Megan and Josh and Lauren Johanning, all of Sullivan, Missouri; 23 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one sister, Grace Altemeyer; special caregiver and friend, Janice Center of Sullivan, Missouri; other relatives and friends.
    In light of the recent resurgence of COVID-19, the Johanning family is asking that you please wear a mask during the visitation and funeral services.
    Visitation was held from 4:30-8 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2020 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Missouri and from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at the Grace City Church in Bourbon, Missouri.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at the Grace City Church in Bourbon, Missouri with Pastor Tom Rudloff officiating.
    Interment with full military honors followed in the Evergreen Cemetery in Leslie, Missouri.
    Arrangements under the direction of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Missouri.
