The Steelville and St. James varsity girls basketball teams both earned victories in the first round of the Peoples Bank Holiday Classic tournament in Sullivan Monday, while Cuba lost its opening game.
The tournament schedule was modified Monday when it was announced that second-seeded Owensville forfeit their first-round game due to the coronavirus. That gave Sullivan a bye into the semifinals.
In Monday’s first game, top-seeded Helias defeated eighth-seeded Cuba 79-20. In the second game, fourth-seeded Steelville got past fifth-seeded Borgia 53-46. And in the third game, third-seeded St. James beat sixth-seeded Salem 64-35.
The second round of the tournament on Wednesday was set with Cuba taking on Borgia in the consolation semifinals at 4:30 p.m., followed the championship semifinal games with Helias taking on Steelville at 6 p.m. and Sullivan facing St. James at 7:30 p.m. Salem had a bye in the consolation game.
The final round of the tournament will be played on Friday, starting with the consolation game at 4:30 p.m., followed by the third-place game at 6 p.m. and championship at 7:30 p.m.
