Lady Tigers win opening games of 2021

A hot 22-6 first quarter fueled the St. James Lady Tigers to a 66-37 victory over the New Haven Lady Shamrocks Monday, Dec. 4 to open Four Rivers Conference play at New Haven. St. James improved to 5-3 while New Haven dropped to 4-5.

Senior forward Hannah Marcee powered the Lady Tigers in the first quarter with 10 points to give St. James a 22-6 lead. New Haven tried to claw back in the second quarter with 14 points, but St. James poured in 15 points behind a seven-point second-quarter performance by junior guard Aly Bullock.
The third quarter looked much like the first, as St. James outscored New Haven 20-4. Senior guard Bailey Wells netted seven of her own in the third, while Bullock and freshman guard Emily Recker added four each.
New Haven outscored St. James in the final period 13-9, but it was not enough to concern the Lady Tigers in a 66-37 win. Sophomore guard Livi Herron accounted for seven of St. James’ nine points in fourth quarter.
“We were able to get off to a fast start with good energy and defensive pressure,” said Lady Tiger head coach Terry Wells. “That set the tone for the game. The kids did a good job of moving the ball and passing well to create easy shots. It led to a balanced attack in which everybody got involved. When outside shots start falling, we will be a tough matchup for anybody.”
St. James had four players score in double-digits, with Bullock leading the way with 16 points. Wells added 13, Marcee had 12, and Herron had 11.
St. James topped New Haven 40-37 in the junior varsity game. Freshman guard Kendall Costoplos netted 17 for the Lady Tigers.
St. James was to play in Nixa Tuesday, Jan. 5 before returning home for a matchup on Thursday, Jan. 7 versus Steelville.
