Avis “Maxine” Halbert Barber of Steelville, Missouri was born on Sunday, August 18, 1935 in Steelville, Missouri to Wilbur “Chub” and Ida Frances Downing Clay and passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2021 at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 5 days.
Maxine was a lifelong resident of Crawford County. She had attended grade school at Liberty School and graduated from Steelville High School in the Class of 1951.
She married Eddie Gene Halbert on February 18, 1955 in Steelville, Missouri.
Maxine was a housewife while she raised her children, then worked as a teacher’s aide and bus driver for the school for many years and then was a secretary at the church.
Years after Gene passed away, she married Vernon Eugene Barber on August 18, 2007 at Faith Chapel in Cuba, Missouri.
Maxine accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at an early age and attended NHIM church in Steelville, Missouri. She loved horseback riding. She and Gene were members of the Ozark Trailblazers and helped get it started.
Maxine enjoyed going to the creek, fishing and swimming. She loved to paint. She liked to play the banjo and played a little on the guitar and piano.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur “Chub” and Ida Clay; first husband, Gene Halbert; second husband, Vernon Barber; parents-in-law, Earl and Ada Halbert; brothers, Charlie Clay and Cecil Clay; brother-in-law, Rusty Presley; daughter-in-law, Nancy Sue Halbert; and son-in-law, John Weber.
She is survived by her children, Lonnie (Kristina) Halbert and John (Janice) Halbert, both of Steelville, Missouri and Charlene (Kevin) Jones of Edgar Springs, Missouri; siblings, Shirley Presley of Payson, Arizona and Chuck (Elsie) Clay of Havre de Grace, Maryland; sisters-in-law, Joyce (Jim) Cottrell of Cherryville, Missouri and Karen Bueneman of Steelville, Missouri; brother-in-law, Russell (Judy) Halbert of Steelville, Missouri; grandchildren, Justin Halbert of St. Louis, Missouri, Carl (Brandi) Weber of Rolla, Missouri, Cody Weber of Warrensburg, Missouri, Steffany (Pete) Stringer and Austin Halbert, both of Steelville, Missouri; 13 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, May 28, 2021 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri.
Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2021 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri with Pastor Angel Monda officiating.
Burial was at the Halbert Family Cemetery in Steelville, Missouri.
