Edna Lee Hawkins Martin was born May 10, 1926 to Edna Totten and George Hawkins near Doniphan, Missouri and passed away May 23, 2021 at age 95 years.
Edna Lee was raised on a rural farm in Ripley County. There was a family store on their property and they sold ice and other items for the locals.
Her dad was entrepreneurial and at one time had 1,000 chickens. He also purchased the first school bus so his kids and the neighboring children on the route could get to school in town.
On Friday nights, the neighbors waited for the bus to go to town for some fun and supplies.
Edna Lee left home at an early age to work in St Louis, Missouri to help out with finances for the family. She worked at a boarding house, Bell Telephone, where she once handled a phone call for President Truman, Pope’s Cafeteria, a private housekeeper and finally in a defense plant which supported World War II efforts.
Coming back from St Louis, Missouri to Ripley County and the farm, she married Elvis Martin. She worked hard alongside her husband, picking and chopping cotton, caring for her child along on her cotton sack and tending the chickens her dad gave them as a wedding present. When their children were young, they kept the farm but moved to Overland, Missouri.
She worked at RC Can Co working night shifts when needed to make ends meet. They still maintained the farm, making countless trips on weekends and eventually built their own home and retired there in their early 50’s to raise cattle.
Edna always said she loved three things in this order: God, her family and the USA. She loved to cook, bake, do puzzles and sew clothes and made over 160 quilts. The grandsons said it best, “She set the standard for grandparenting.” Edna touched so many lives with her welcoming smile, great laugh and hearty meals.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years; 13 siblings; and her parents, Edna and George Hawkins.
She is survived by two children, Mike Martin (Nettie) of St. James, Missouri and Joan Wilson (Tom) of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; five grandsons and their wives, Michael Martin (Andrea), Rob (Laura), Greg (Scarlett), Jay (Emily) and Brian (Alicia); 10 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
