Registration being accepted for Forest City Explorer program

The city of St. James has started a new program for children in the community and registration is now available for those wanting to participate. Called Forest City Explorers, the program will offer outdoor activities throughout the summer.

“It’s for kids that just finished kindergarten through fifth grade. We have weekly themes,” Parks Director Kristy Rich explained. This week, the program is having a soft launch, allowing participants a chance to learn about the program and to participate in some activities.
“They are doing like ‘messy science’ (Tuesday), so they will have different science experiments. Thursday’s are our days over at St. James Park. We have Kendra Swee, (from Maramec Spring Park), coming in every Thursday morning to do a conservation program with the kids and then they get to swim at Tiger Shark Waterpark that afternoon,” Rich explained.
“Parents can start dropping kids off here (at the Recreation Center in Nelson Hart Park) at 7:30 a.m. and we go through 5:30 p.m. They bring their own lunch. We do provide an afternoon snack,” Rich said.
The program will mostly be held outside, but could be moved into the Recreation Center if the weather is bad. Activities are scheduled all summer, with an end date of August 20.
“One of the week’s is ‘Let’s Get Physical’ another is a mini-soccer camp, a mini basketball camp, just different activities. But, Thursdays are always our park day,” she said. Participants should bring their own towels and bathing suits on Thursdays for their trip to the pool
Registration can be completed at, with the official start set to begin next week. The cost of the program is $80 per week. The themes of each week include Let’s Explore, Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue, Make it and Take it, Let’s Get Physical, I’m Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot, The Movies, and Back to School summer wrap up.
