One by one each of us will leave this earth and go off into eternity. While on earth Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,” John 14:6
So how do we become followers of Jesus? How do we become part of His kingdom? Let us look in our bibles to see how people became followers of Jesus, Christians, in bible times. The book of Acts gives a history of an early church of Jesus Christ. It is the only book in the bible that tells us of people before coming a Christian and the process they went through in order to become a Christian, a part of His kingdom.
On the day of Pentecost when Peter preached the first full gospel sermon telling of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, the believers asked what they should do. “Peter said to them ‘Repent and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit,” Acts 2:38. When we turn to Acts 8:35-39 a, we learn of the conversions of the Ethiopian eunuch. “So Phillip proceeded to tell him the good news about Jesus…as they were traveling down the road, they came to some water. The eunuch said, “Look there’s water! What would keep me from being baptized? And Phillip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he replied, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” Then he ordered the chariot to stop, and both Phillip and the eunuch went down into the water and Phillip baptized him. When they came out of the water the Lord carried Phillip away…” See also Act 9:11-19 Acts 10:11-48, Acts 16:11-15, Acts 16:30-33, Acts 18:66-8 and Acts 19:1-5.
When we read and study these conversations, we learn that these people believed in Jesus, they repented of their sins, they confessed that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and they were baptized in water for the forgiveness of their sins. That which made people Christians in bible times should make us Christians today.
