“If I were to be asked why I do art, I would have to say it’s because I cannot, not do art.” explains artist Gene Huebner.
Huebner, of St. James, is the featured artist for the month of May at Heartland Arts Gallery and Gifts. The show title is “The Steelville Landscape and More Art Show.” His paintings will be featured and available for purchase during the entire month of May. On May 7, from noon until 2 p.m., drop in and meet Huebner in person to view his work and get a first-hand account of his art philosophy.

Huebner explains his technique in this way, “I look for something that attracts me like the color of the sky or shapes of the clouds, the direction of natural or contrived light and the corresponding cast shadows or the interesting shapes in nature and manmade objects and embellish these perceived unusual features.”
“By accentuating these things that viewers may miss, I give the viewer something to think about, not just something to see. It’s the job of the artist to bring to the viewer the best that can be found around him along with some creativity or exaggeration, not just the normal and ordinary and above all, to follow my innate intuition,” he said.
Huebner added, “I also feel art should say something to the viewer and now I try to develop a story about what I’m creating. It may not be a story that has a beginning, middle and end, but a story, nonetheless. I have discovered that if there is a story, it helps me to follow a path to develop the work into a completed piece.”
Heartland Arts Gallery and Gifts is open Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is located in the Evan’s House at 303 W. Main Street, Steelville.
