Two years later

As we approach the two-year anniversary of January 6th, voters in rural Missouri seem to be stuck in a sad stage of denial in the evolution of the “Big Lie” that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

Since the violence on January 6th, I have watched our community critically ignore sworn testimony from members of the Republican Party, thousands of pages of phone/text/email communications, along with hundreds of hours of video evidence detailing most aspects of the failed coup. These indisputable facts are disregarded in lieu of rhetoric from spineless men in suits, deceptive information on the internet, and so-called research on debunked election fraud conspiracies.
Mike Pence recently referenced a Bible verse to describe how he perceived the events leading up to the violent insurrection on January 6th. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine: but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (2 Timothy 4:3-4). I believe this verse also neatly sums up how the Republican Party has swiftly turned so far away from the truth and into a party who largely peddles in disinformation, hoaxes, and propaganda.
The so called “Twitter Files” are the newest hope the Republican Party offers as proof that the 2020 election was stolen. The “Twitter Files” have failed to do much outside of highlighting the internal workings of content moderation (managing disinformation) during periods of peak platform participation. Not even close to proof of the ever-elusive stolen election fable held firm by many within our community.
Donald Trump has even suggested terminating the United States Constitution due to “MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION” disclosed in the release of the “Twitter Files.” Delusional suggestions like this are based on his own lust for power and are not of sound doctrine.
The ”Twitter Files” also released documents detailing how employees handled the “Hunter Biden laptop story” after it was published by The New York Post. The Post story falsely reported to offer smoking gun evidence of Joe Biden’s corruption. Initially Twitter decided to suppress the story but within 24 hours had reversed course after it became clear the reporting had some validity.
However, we know little more now than they did two years ago. The laptop contains a couple of vague emails about possible murky business dealings which may or may not be a crime. Hardly a smoking gun of corruption by the man’s father the newspaper claimed three weeks before an election.
I have little doubt that Hunter Biden was an influence peddler who sought to monetize his access to his dad. If influence peddling (you know, using your last name as leverage) were illegal, much of our community would have a criminal record.
MAGA extremists have taken the microphone from the party whose ideas I once admired and infected the “itching ears” within my community. Our community has been explaining, excusing, avoiding, and eventually cheering on the most morally depraved figure in American politics and it has to stop.
