The Steelville High School boys and girls basketball teams will both be playing for a district championship on Friday. The Cardinals and Lady Cardinals each entered the Class 3 District 3 tourney, which is being held in Herculaneum this week, as the number-one seeds.
The Steelville High School boys basketball teams closed out their regular season at home on February 20 with a sweep over Vienna. The varsity headed into district tournament play with a record of 22-2 and won their fourth straight Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) championship with a perfect 5-0 mark.
The varsity Lady Cardinals basketball team at Steelville High School closed out their regular season with three straight victories on consecutive night to end their regular season with a record of 20-5. They also captured their third straight Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) championship on a night when junior Sydney Booker passed the 1,000-point scoring mark for her career.
The Steelville High School boys and girls varsity basketball teams have both been seeded first for the Class 3 District 3 tournament, which will get underway Saturday in Herculaneum.
The Lady Cardinals, 16-5, earned the top seed despite not having the best record in the district. Herculaneum, 17-6, was seeded second and St. Pius X, 18-2, received the fourth seed. Others in the tournament are third-seeded Grandview at 14-6, fifth-seeded Cuba at 10-13, sixth-seeded Jefferson at 11-12, seventh-seeded Kingston at 9-13, and eighth-seeded Bourbon at 5-15.
The Lady Cardinals will close out first-round play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against Bourbon. Also on Saturday, Grandview will take on Jefferson at 11 a.m., Herculaneum plays Kingston at 12:30 p.m., and St. Pius X will meet Cuba at 2 p.m.
If the Lady Cardinals advance, they will take on the St. Pius X/Cuba winner at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, while the Herculaneum/Kingston winner will play the Grandview/Jefferson winner at 7:30 p.m. The girls championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28.
The SHS boys earned the top seed with the best record in the tourney at 20-2. Second-seeded St. Pius X is 16-6, third-seeded Jefferson 12-10, fourth-seeded Bourbon 17-5, fifth-seeded Herculaneum 8-13, sixth-seeded Kingston 9-11, seventh-seeded Cuba 6-15, and eighth-seeded Grandview 7-17.
The first round of the boys tournament will be played on Monday, Feb. 24, with Jefferson taking on Kingston at 3:30 p.m., followed by St. Pius X vs. Cuba at 5 p.m., Bourbon playing Herculaneum at 6:30 p.m., and the Cardinals meeting Grandview at 8 p.m.
If Steelville advances, they will play the Bourbon/Grandview winner at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26. The other semifinal will feature the St. Pius X/Cuba winner against the Jefferson/Kingston winner at 7:30 p.m. The boys championship game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28.
The varsity girls basketball team at Steelville High School went 1-1 last week, with a non-conference loss and a conference win, to move to 17-5 on the season. The Lady Cardinals will try to wrap up the Gasconade Valley Conference championship as they close out the regular season this week.
