School budget includes salary increases

    Prior to leaving for his new job on July 1, now former Steelville Schools Superintendent Mike Whittaker presented the board with an annual budget for fiscal year 2021-22. It was approved at the board meeting held on June 21, and Whittaker noted he would meet with his successor to go over the budget in detail as part of the transition.

Council approves pavement contracts

    The St. James City Council has approved two pavement contracts for patching and paving projects throughout the city. Pierce Asphalt was the low bidder on both projects.

Chamber golf tournament deemed successful

    The St. James Chamber of Commerce held its first annual Golf Tournament fundraiser on Friday, July 9. Money raised during the event will go towards the cost of this year’s Grape and Fall Festival.

Stabbing leads to assault charges

    Assault charges have been filed against the St. Clair man accused of stabbing another man in the leg and back during an altercation that took place on June 25 at a Crawford County residence in Sullivan.

City planning $400,000 in road improvements

    The city of Cuba is planning to do about $400,000 in road improvements during its 2021-22 fiscal year, with the bulk of the work due to be completed this summer. Funds for the projects were included in this year’s budget, which was approved by the city council in late June and began on July 1.
