SPD Chief asks to replace officer moved to SRO position

Steelville Police Chief Mike Sherman has asked again about filling the patrolman’s position vacated when the School Resource Officer position was created in the fall. The Steelville City Council and Steelville School District made an agreement to share an officer who is primarily working in the schools. As a result of their agreement, the Steelville Police Department is operating with one less officer available on the streets.

Resale shop thief found with meth

After he was caught stealing from a Steelville thrift store, a local man was found with meth and charged with possession. Dalton Miles Quinton, 21, of Steelville, faces the charge of class D felony possession of a controlled substance as a result of the December 30, 2018 incident.

First Street is now one-way from Main to Yadkin

A portion of First Street in Steelville is now designated for one-way traffic only. Aldermen voted to approve the ordinance putting that into effect at their January 7 city council meeting, and the signs went up later last week.

R-3 School District looks at plans for downtown campus

The Steelville School District is considering options to update the downtown campus. Facilities needs have been a high priority for the school board, with discussions on the topic ongoing over the past several years, especially related to a new transportation department building and on what to do with the old middle school building. With construction of the new bus garage now started, the board has moved on to planning for the future of the other buildings on the town property.
