Republican Sec. of State Jay Ashcroft has proposed a new censorship rule (15 CSR 30-200.015). If passed, he can take away funding from our local library as well as all Missouri public libraries, if they don’t follow the very strict book ban regulations. This proposal will also allow ANYONE to challenge access to books and what can be read.

Limiting access is just mental enslavement
History has repeatedly shown that when civilizations enact rules to ban books, they have begun down a slippery slope which frequently ends in violence. Book bans erase history and represent the efforts to silence the most underrepresented in literature and in our rural community.
Not being held accountable?
Recent actions by the school board seem to just be a distraction to avoid the real issue.
Anything but cowards
I would like to commend the five members of the Steelville Board of Education that had the courage to stand up for what is right and in the best interests of our children.
Veterans may find local opportunities
Transitioning from military to civilian life can be challenging for veterans. As they contemplate what’s next on their career path, the answer may lie in a rural community.
