The St. James Board of Education heard an update on a health insurance consortium the district is a member of and voiced concerns over the rising cost of insurance due to high claims in recent years. Member districts have begun making a push for a wellness program designed to help staff take simple preventative steps to help raise health to combat those costs. Over the past three years, the number of claims have increased, leading to several districts leaving the consortium and straining those who have stayed.

A calendar committee, made up of school district staff, community members, and parents, made a recommendation to the St. James Board of Education on Thursday, December 20. The board set a public hearing for the 2019-20 school calendar for January 17 at 12:55 p.m. in the administration building to hear public input before approving the proposal.
Calendars are still on sale for a gun raffle that will help fund a concert series next year. Sponsored by the St. James Chamber of Commerce, purchase of a calendar will enter the recipient into a weekly gun raffle beginning in February.
School District Technology Director Nick Krueger made a recommendation to the St. James Board of Education the district should move to iPads as the technology of choice. The recommendation comes after months of student and teacher surveys, reviewing costs, and determining if Chromebooks or iPads would be the best fit for the district.
Work to construct a new early childhood center and renovating the high school has been delayed after the district received cost estimates for both projects. Construction is expected to begin by the spring, but school administrators are currently working with the architect and construction manager to finalize plans.
