St. James Police Chief Ron Jones appeared before the St. James City Council with bids received to purchase two new police vehicles. The council approved his recommendation, with funds already approved in this year’s budget, and Jones will move forward with the purchase.

This collection has been so graciously displayed by a James Memorial Public Library patron who brought in part of her collection of porcelain flowers and hummingbirds, some of her favorite things. Her collection started years ago and her family and friends tend to buy her a new one for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, etc. It's a wonderful display for spring with all the flowers blooming and the hummingbirds coming back to this area.
A community information night was held on Saturday, May 11 to inform the community about rising dangers facing the county due to heroin and opiates. The third annual event was held at Tabernacle of Praise Church and featured guest speakers from law enforcement and emergency responders, testimonies from recovered addicts and their families, and provided resources to the community on dealing with addiction.
Kendra Gibson, representative for All Inclusive Rec, spoke to the St. James City Council on Monday night about the city’s interest in building a handicapped accessible playground at the St. James City Park. The city’s Park Board has been entertaining ways to raise funds for the project, holding two public forums in recent weeks to begin assembling a committee of local volunteers to spearhead the project.
The St. James Senior Center, located at 114 Eldon in St. James has many activities scheduled in May. On May 14, the Phelps County Collector of Revenue, Faith Barnes, will be speaking about the process of paying taxes and eventually be able to receive payments versus traveling to Rolla. On May 15, Hazel Shoemate is hosting a painting class at 1 p.m.
