If the Steelville High School varsity baseball team could have just gotten off to a better start at home against St. James on April 23, it might have been a different outcome. The Cardinals gave up seven runs in the top of the first and fell to the Tigers 14-12, despite three home runs from senior Garrett Marshall.
The only question headed into Saturday’s Gasconade Valley Conference track meet in Cuba wasn’t whether the Steelville High School Cardinals and Lady Cardinals would win the GVC titles for the third year in a row, but by how much. As it turned out—a lot!
The Steelville Middle School boys won a pair of track meets at St. James and Vienna last week. The Lady Cardinals finished second in both.
The Cardinals won a close contest at St. James on Friday with 179.5 points, while St. James finished second with 159.5. Licking was third in the nine-team field with 83.
The Steelville Middle School boys came home with the first-place plaque from a huge meet at Linn on April 18. The Cardinals finished first in a 16-team field, while the Lady Cards came in third among 14 teams.
The Steelville High School varsity baseball team was looking to improve to 3-0 in Gasconade Valley Conference play and was leading Vienna 5-1 headed into the seventh inning at home last week. The Eagles, however, rallied for eight runs and got past the Cardinals 9-5.
