The Steelville High School girls basketball teams hosted St. James on January 9 in a highly anticipated rematch of last year’s district championship game on the varsity level. The Lady Tigers won that district game and also got the victory last week.
The Steelville High School varsity girls basketball sank nine three pointers from five different players in a 57-40 victory over Belle to open Gasconade Valley Conference play at home Monday night. The Lady Cardinals are now 8-2 overall, with a big test coming up against St. James on Thursday.
The Steelville varsity girls basketball team battled their way to the finals of the 64th Annual Bob Sechrest Jr. Central Christmas Tournament in Park Hills last week, but fell to Ste. Genevieve in the championship game in double overtime on New Year’s Eve. After falling behind by as many as 21 points in the first half, the Lady Cards ultimately lost by just four, 78-74.
The Steelville Lady Cardinals have been seeded first for next week’s Fatima Comet Classic Girls Basketball Tournament, which is scheduled to get underway Monday in Westphalia.
It’s been a busy tournament schedule for the Steelville High School varsity boys basketball team over the month, playing in the Sullivan, Park Hills, and Owensville tourneys in December and January. The Cardinals finished up their second tourney in Park Hills on New Year’s Eve, taking fifth place, and opened their third of the season Monday night in Owensville.
