The Four-Rivers Conference opener proved to be no problem for the surging St. James High School boys basketball team. The Tigers won their fourth straight game in blowout fashion December 18 at Union, rolling over the Union Wildcats 58-34.
The St. James High School wrestling team pulled out a winning weekend at the Moberly Spartan Duals, held Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20-21.
The Tigers came away from their year-ending competition with a 4-3 record in dual-meet competition. Victories for St. James came over Eldon 54-24, Southern Boone 42-30, Chillicothe 48-33 and Fulton 54-27. Tiger setbacks were by Cameron 69-9, Moberly 64-16 and Pleasant Hill 51-24.
It was a rough week for illness within the St. James High School girls basketball squad last week. But despite their weakened state, the third-seeded Lady Tigers won their final two games to capture the consolation title of the Eighth Annual Peoples Bank/Sullivan Holiday Classic.
STJ knocked off fifth-seeded Salem 52-29 in the consolation final on Friday, Dec. 20.
The Steelville High School varsity girls are seeded fourth in the 64th Annual Bob Sechrest Jr. Central Christmas Tournament at Park Hills, while the SHS varsity boys are seeded seventh. There are eight girls and 16 boys teams in the tourney, which gets underway on Thursday, Dec. 26, and ends on New Year’s Eve.
The Steelville High School varsity girls basketball team went 1-1 last week in a pair of non-conference, back-to-back games against two quality opponents. The Lady Cardinals lost at Licking but got a home win over Crocker.
It was all Steelville, all the time in Simmons Auditorium Friday night. The Cardinals hosted West County and the SHS boys dominated both games.
