The Steelville High School Lady Cardinals softball team saved their wildest game of the season for the opening round of the Class 2 District 10 tournament in Iberia last week. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the team’s final game of the season as they lost a thriller to Laquey 20-19 in eight innings.
Complete domination—that’s the only way to describe the Steelville Middle School girls Red team at the Bland tournament last week. The Lady Cardinals easily won the championship for the second straight year, outscoring their opponents 113-23.
The Steelville Middle School cross country teams earned another clean sweep at the Farmington Invitational on Saturday to close out a fantastic season. The victory gave the SMS boys a perfect season with eight meet titles, while the girls won six meets and finished second in two.
Simon Siebert and Melayna Brown had the best finishes among Cuba High’s cross country runners taking the course at the Owensville High School Invitational on Tuesday, October 9. Siebert placed 43rd for the Cuba boys and Brown took 29th for the varsity girls.
For the second time in three years, the Cuba Lady Wildcats are district softball champions. The Lady Cats defeated Dixon 16-6 in the first round of the Class 2, District 10 tournament and then beat top-seeded Iberia 4-2 in the championship game last Saturday to take the crown. The Lady Cats last won the title in 2016.
Self-inflicted wounds have troubled the Cuba Wildcats in all of their losses this season. And again last Friday night, turnovers played a huge part in the 36-24 loss at home to the Windsor Owls. The Cats turned the ball over to the Owls five times and had three other possessions that ended when they turned the ball over on downs without scoring.
