STJ volleyball built on key returning talent, togetherness

    Built on camaraderie and some key returning talent, the St. James High School volleyball team is hoping for a solid season despite COVID-19 uncertainties.
    The Lady Tigers were to open the season at Salem Tuesday, Sept. 1. The home opener for the Lady Tigers is slated for Sept. 8 against Rolla. It will be Senior Night for STJ, starting at 5 p.m.

    In a game that came right down to the final seconds, the Cuba Wildcats varsity football team won in Sullivan Friday night, defeating the Eagles 27-26. The Cats are now 1-0 to start the season for the first time in program history.

Lady Wildcats ready for volleyball season

    The Cuba High School volleyball season got into full swing this week. The Lady Wildcats opened up with senior night at home on Tuesday against New Haven and will hit the court again on Thursday (Sept. 3) against Houston at 5 p.m.

Dead deer being found in ponds

    A lady sent me an email about finding a dead buck deer in her pond, and another reader called to say he had found one in his pond, too. Both were afraid the deer had Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy, which is the real name of what is commonly referred by a common term, chronic wasting disease, or CWD. But deer found in or next to ponds, creeks or rivers this time of year are dying of something entirely different, a virus known as Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease.

Schools moving up senior nights

    Both Cuba and Bourbon high schools has announced changes to their athletic senior nights due to the potential of games being postponed or canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Senior nights are normally held on the final home games of the season, but they will be held at the home openers this year.
