During the bus trip traveling down I-44, Kenzie Guese and Devin Fuhring found themselves discussing their previous games in Missouri S&T Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building’s Gibson Arena. They remembered dominating teams in the US Bank Holiday Tournament and in sectional playoff action while members of state-ranked St. James High School girls basketball squads.
It was typical Rolla/St. James, with aggressive defense leading the charge.
In a matchup of two of the area’s top high school girls’ basketball teams and old Phelps County rivals, the St. James Lady Tigers took the early lead and kept it most of the way, knocking off the Rolla Lady Bulldogs 68-59 Friday, Jan. 29 at the RHS gym.
The St. James High School wrestling team recorded four dual-meet victories in action last week.
Thursday, Jan. 28 in Wright City the Tigers defeated Christian 59-16 and host Wright City 66-12. And Tuesday, Jan. 26 at Owensville St. James defeated Park Hills Central 39-33 and topped host Owensville 48-30.
The St. James Middle School seventh-grade boys’ basketball team finished second in the Sullivan Tournament, held last week.
Derek Skaggs will continue to play baseball as well as work toward his future at the College of the Ozarks. Skaggs made the announcement during a signing ceremony Thursday, Jan. 28 at St. James High School.
The Cuba High School boys basketball teams got a pair of Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) games played last week, taking on Steelville and Vienna, but the school announced Monday that the Wildcats are quarantined for the next two weeks and will not be back on the court until February 15. It is the third time this season the CHS boys have been quarantined.
