With seven schools fielding complete teams in the Salem Tournament on Thursday, April 4, Wildcat golfers proved they had the stuff to compete under tough conditions. Cuba finished second out of the seven teams with a 383 combined score, and Austin Shockley had the best individual finish. St. Clair won the 18-hole meet with 382 strokes, edging out Cuba by one shot.
The Steelville High School boys track team earned a big first-place finish in Westphalia last week at the Fatima Buersmeyer Invitational. The Cardinals won the meet by 44 points in a 13-team field, while the Lady Cards came in third among 11 squads.
The Steelville High School varsity baseball team won two out of three games in the Gasconade Valley Conference tournament last week to finish third. The Cardinals only loss was to the eventual champions, Vienna.
The Steelville High School golf team had a pair of matches last week, competing in Dixon and Belle. The Cardinals were without several varsity players at both events, so the scoring was a little higher than in their previous matches.
After their opening meet of the season scheduled for March 28 in Vienna was canceled due to rain, the Steelville Middle School track teams competed for the first time this spring at St. James on April 3. The SMS boys finished first, while the girls came in third in an eight-team field.
The St. James High School baseball team split a pair of road games last week. The Tigers opened Four-Rivers Conference play at Sullivan Monday, April 1 and was beaten 6-4. And Tuesday, April 2 St. James clipped Salem 4-3 in a non-league game at Salem.
