The greatest excitement about the outdoors in 2020, for me personally, centered around the cancellation of numerous media trips, which I had been scheduled attend. COVID became the eminent killer of outdoor media trips for me and dozens of other outdoor writers. However, 2021 is shaping up to be a better year for outdoor communicators.

MDC reports final deer harvest for season more than 296,500
Missouri's 2020-2021 deer-hunting season ended Jan. 15 with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reporting a preliminary total deer harvest for the season of 296,516. Of the deer harvested, 140,468 were antlered bucks, 28,587 were button bucks, and 127,461 were does.
Brown trout hatching project appears successful
On December 12, members of the Gateway Chapter of Trout Unlimited (GTU) placed brown trout eggs in Vibert egg boxes in Dry Creek and the Westover Spring branch southeast of Steelville in an experiment that could ultimately lead to an improved brown trout fishery in the Meramec River. This past weekend, members returned to Westover Farms to find that many of the eggs had hatched.
MDC offers free virtual field to freezer sausage making class Jan. 19
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free virtual class in sausage making from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Venison or elk are especially popular sausage components among hunters.
