Discussions got heated when the St. James City Council discussed purchasing four new police cars. Two cars were included in the fiscal budget that was approved by the council earlier this year, but the police department are down two vehicles after accidents, one of which totaled a police interceptor.
The family of Dick Wilson, one of three residents of St. James who were killed in Vietnam, honored the 50th anniversary of his passing this week. Wilson served as in the Air Force when his helicopter was shot down southwest of Saigon and he died two weeks later.
Last month, the St. James City Council heard a residential complaint about a swimming pool that was set up in a neighbor’s yard, leading the city to consider codes on pools. The council was presented with an ordinance on Monday night that would tighten the nuisance code on pools and require fencing pools for safety.
The community garden was moved from James Boulevard near the Caring Center to its new location on Sydney Street when construction of the St. James Senior Center began. Since the move in April, the garden has thrived under the gardening skills of Paul Forister, and produce has been given away locally to support others in the community.
