Bourbon High School’s fall baseball season started with a bang, as the Warhawks defeated Viburnum 15-3 in its season and home opener Sept. 14 to go to 1-0 on the year. The Blue and White were scheduled to play in Dixon Sept. 16, but the game was canceled due to heavy rain in the area.
Bourbon hosted Stoutland Sept. 21 and will play in Kingston Sept. 24 in its next contest. Both games will be detailed in next week’s edition. The Warhawks will then host Kingston and Steelville Sept. 28 and Sept. 29, respectively.
Sept. 14 vs. Viburnum
Bourbon’s baseball team welcomed the Viburnum Blue Jays into town for its first game of the fall season. After starting pitcher Emmett Jones mowed down the Jays in the top of the first, the Warhawks exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the inning to seize control of the contest. Bourbon added three runs in the second and two runs in the fourth and cruised to a 15-3 victory in five innings on a hot afternoon.
Bourbon’s top four hitters in the batting order, Anson Hormann, Garrett Wallis, Emmett Jones and Dawson King provided the majority of the pop in the Warhawks batting order. Hormann had three hits and scored three times, Wallis smacked two doubles deep into the outfield gaps, singled and scored a game-high four times and Jones and King each had three hits and three runs scored. Chase Bouse singled twice, walked and scored, Allan Studeny singled, walked and scored, Jonathan Poole walked twice and scored and freshman Blake Wallis walked and scored in his high school debut.
Jones was also dominant on the mound, striking out five of the six batters he faced in two innings of work while finishing with an efficient 27 pitches. Wallis hurled 40 pitches in middle relief and King threw 20 pitches, putting the finishing touches on the win.
