Basketball season may be over, but notoriety for the Cardinals for their efforts from this past winter keep rolling in. Steelville senior Malakai Bruno and junior Emeri Perkins were named to the Central Missouri Media Class 4 All-District first teams by local writers and media members.
Cardinal senior Jackson Woods was named to the second team All-District boys’ roster and junior Jazmyn Hurd was named to the second team All-District girls’ squad.
Bruno was named the co-most valuable player of the Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) along with Belle’s Hank Stratman after averaging 10.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2 steals per game as Steelville’s starting point guard.
“He (Bruno) was our best all-around player and controlled every aspect of the game for us,” Steelville head coach Josh Pritchett said following the season.
Perkins, the Lady Cardinals’ leading scorer, showcased her ability to shoot from long range and attack the basket. She netted a season-high 34 points against Class 5 school Festus on Dec. 26 in the 70th annual Bob Sechrest Tournament in Park Hills and was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 27.3 points per game in tournament play. Perkins averaged 15.6 points per game registered team-high 59 three-pointers, 66 made free throws and 109 deflections on defense. Perkins was also second on the team behind Hurd, with 57 total steals.
Woods was Steelville’s leader in scoring and steals, logging 11.1 points and 2.2 steals per game as the Cardinal’s starting shooting guard. And, according to Pritchett, “took a big jump from last year to this year,” after going from the team’s sixth man to top-scoring option.
Hurd, Steelville’s lead ball handler and top on-ball defender, averaged 11.6 points per game while tallying team-high totals of 117 assists, 94 steals and 800 minutes played. She will return along with Perkins and Steelville’s leading rebounder, Sylvia Davis, for their senior seasons with hopes of regaining the Class 3 District 8 title they claimed during their sophomore year.
