After waiting an extra day to run due the rain, Steelville High School's cross country team burst into the Belle Invitational on Sept. 24, putting on an exemplary performance where many runners ran their personal best times.
Landon Rutledge won the 5,000 meter boys varsity race with a blistering 17:14.74 time that was a personal record for him. Owen Rutledge took fifth place and medaled with a personal best 19:01.97 time. Lucas Garms finished in 36th and Max Harmon took 44th, which were all personal-best times.
Steelville’s girls cross country team also excelled in the 5000 meter race, and had five runners finish in the top 20, garnering them all medals. Adalei Perkins led the Lady Cardinals with a personal record of 23:04.08, which earned her a second-place finish. Elisabeth Warden took seventh place with a time of 23:41.78 and Kendell Brinkley finished in 24:34.59 and took 11th, which were both personal best times. Lydia Smelser finished in 14th and Emeri Perkins took 19th to round out medalists. Stormee Yates also ran a personal-best time and took 31st for the Lady Cardinals, who finished in second place as a team.
In the two-mile middle school race, the Steelville Middle School team also had a solid showing. Peyton Martin took 14th and Brantley Booker finished in 17th, both earning medals. The Lady Cardinals middle school team also had two runners earn meals with top-20 finishes. Julianna Collinson took 15th and Maddi Settles was right behind her, and finished in 16th.
The Cardinals then competed on Sept. 27 in the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia. The Cardinals varsity boys team finished in 16th place out of 23 teams but received another medalist performance from Landon Rutledge, who took sixth place in the 5K race with a time of 17:05.2. Owen Rutledge was the next Cardinal to finish, and took 40th out of 193 runners.
The Lady Cardinals girls varsity team finished 14th out of 21 teams. Elisabeth Warden finished in 53rd, Adelei Perkins took 60th and Kendal Brinkley finished in 78th out of 205 runners that competed.
Steelville will compete locally on Oct. 1 in the Cuba Cross Country Meet at Hood Park.
