STEELVILLE — Steelville High School’s boy’s basketball team concluded play in 2025 with a loss to South Iron in the consolation round of the 70th Annual Bob Sechrest Jr. Tournament in Park Hills, which is detailed below.

The Cardinals were seeded 14th out 16 teams in the tournament and fell to the eventual tournament champion, third-seeded Festus, in the first round of the tournament. South Iron went on to defeat DeSoto and Arcadia Valley to win the consolation bracket of the tournament to go to 10-2 on the season.

Steelville had close to two weeks off after the South Iron game and will play in St. James on Jan. 9 and in Potosi on Jan. 12 before hosting St. Clair on Jan. 14 in its first home game in close to two months. The Cardinals are currently 4-6 on the season after losing twice in the Christmas Tournament.

Dec. 29 vs. South Iron

The Cardinals drew another tough matchup in the Park Hills Christmas Tournament against the South Iron Panthers.

Steelville was competitive in the first quarter and trailed 18-16 after the first buzzer sounded. But the Panthers found their rhythm in the second frame and outscored the Cardinals 25-11 to take a 43-27 lead heading into halftime. South Iron relentlessly attacked the basket in the third quarter and ballooned its lead to 30 points heading into the final quarter. Steelville outscored South Iron by 11 points in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late as South Iron emerged with a 82-63 win over the Cardinals.

South Iron featured a balanced attack of five players who scored in double figures, led by junior Carter St. Gemme, who poured in a game-high 23 points.

Nate Gambill knocked down six shots from deep and two free throws to score a season-high 20 points to lead the Cardinals. Jackson Woods drained a trio of trifectas and a pair of free throws to finish with 11 points. Steelville front court players Chace Grayson and Hunter Starbeck finished with six points apiece and guards Trentin Garrison and Malakai Bruno each chipped in five points. Freshman Trey Gambill scored his first varsity baskets and finished with five points on a three-pointer and a close range shot in the fourth quarter. Landon Rutledge chipped in four points and Will Bailey scored two to round out the scoring for the Cardinals.
