After its Sept. 23 game against Bismarck was canceled due to rain, the Steelville High School baseball team traveled to Vienna on Sept. 26 and 27 to compete in the Vienna Fall Classic.
The Cardinals’ three-game winning streak came to an end on Sept. 26 when they lost 9-2 against Vienna. The Eagles led 2-0 in a pitchers' duel heading into the fifth inning. The Eagles put across two more in the top of the fifth to make it a 4-0 game.
The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring two on runs batted in from Garrett Richter and Chase Grayson to make it a 4-2 game. The Eagles took back momentum in the sixth, scoring five runs to extend its lead.
Nate Gambill led Steelville with two hits and started on the mound, pitching four innings, striking out three.
The Cardinals played Iberia the next day on Sept. 27, and fell 11-1 in five innings.
Ripken Halbert recorded two of Steelville’s three hits to lead the way for the Cardinals. Halbert also pitched for Steelville, but couldn’t get out of the third inning due to Iberia’s potent offense. Caden Collinson recorded the only other hit for the Cardinals.
Steelville returned home to play its last regular-season game of the fall on Sept. 30 against Bourbon, which will be detailed in next week’s paper.
