Carol Smith Named Senior Companion of the Month

Posted

The Phelps County Senior Companion Program is proud to recognize Carol Smith of Rolla, Missouri as the Senior Companion of the Month for January 2026. Smith has been a devoted volunteer since October 2022 and exemplifies compassion and care for all the clients she serves.

As a Senior Companion, she enjoys visiting and playing cards with her clients.

“I like having someone to talk to,” Smith shared. “It helps give me a reason to get out. It does as much for me as it does for them.”

Smith's journey is inspiring—she returned to school at age 40, earned her master’s degree, and became a family therapist in Springfield, Missouri. After retiring, she moved to Rolla to be closer to her family. She has two children and four grandchildren, with a fifth on the way. She loves attending church, quilting, singing, and helping people.

As Senior Companion of the Month, she received a floral arrangement donated by Blossom Basket Florist and a $10 gift card from Sinks Pharmacy. The Senior Companion Program is sponsored by the Phelps County Commission, funded by AmeriCorps Corporation for National and Community Service and supported by several local groups and individuals.  Senior Companions help their peers maintain the independence they have worked for all their lives.  For more information call 573-458-6180.
