Chamois claims several medals at California, Pirates earn second at SMCC meet

Chamois track and field athletes turned in a strong showing across two late-season meets, highlighted by multiple medal performances and continued growth as the postseason approaches. 

At the California Guy Rush Memorial on Thursday, Brayden Cotton earned a pair of second-place medals in the shot put (13.03 meters) and discus (32.28 meters), while Carly Schollmeyer was second in the 3200-meter run in 14:52.47, also earning a medal.

Kaden Wuelling placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 19.00 and added a seventh-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.

“This was a good last meet of the year,” Coach John Leach said. “We have five practices to fine-tune all of the events for kids. We need to work hard this week to get ready for the meet. This team just needs to go out and give all they have, and good things will happen.”

Additional competitors included Rex McKague, Raigen Cramer, Evert Mehmert, Grayson Gerloff, Oliver Carter, Savanah Sieg, and Ben Ruegge, each contributing across sprint, distance, and field events.

Earlier in the week at the Show-Me Conference meet in Russellville, the boys scored 81 points to place second, while the girls scored 25 points to finish seventh.

Cotton delivered a standout conference meet in the field events, winning the shot put at 12.83m, claiming first in the javelin (32.99m), and placing second in discus (35.20m).

Wuelling earned All-Conference honors with a second-place finish in the 110m hurdles (49.72) and a third-place medal in the 100m dash (12.46). Schollmeyer added an  All-Conference performance with a second-place finish in the 3200m run in 14:47.23.

Oliver Carter added an all-conference performance with a third-place finish in the shot put at 9.60m.

The 800m relay team of McKague, Mehmert, Gerloff, and Wuelling placed third in 1:46.84.

“I am proud of what the kids did at the conference meet,” Coach Leach said.

Chamois junior high athlete Jaelyn Thoenen had a good day at the Show-Me Conference meet.

She earned fifth in the 400m dash (1:20.14), sixth in the long jump (3.10m), and eighth in the 200m dash (32.18).
