Crawford County commissioners on Oct. 21 approved updating an ordinance regulating ATVs and UTVs on county roads which includes making a lifetime permit available.
“The lifetime permit is on the machine itself so as long as you own the machine no more permit needed,” said Presiding Commissioner Steve Black. “Agreed to add a lifetime permit to possibly make it easier for the ATV owner and the clerk’s office that sells the permits. It will become effective as soon as the ordinance is final and the tags can be ordered and received.”
Currently, the one-year permit for either machine costs $20 per vehicle and a two-year permit is $40 per vehicle. Those rates will remain the same in the updated ordinance. For the lifetime permit, it is $100 per vehicle and non-transferable, meaning if the machine gets replaced with a new or used machine, a new $100 permit will have to be purchased.
On a yearly average, about 225 individuals in Crawford County purchase ATV and UTV permits, according to the county clerk’s office, with two-year permits being the most popular.
In addition to the updated ordinance, there will be a $5 permit available for a three-day special event.
Black said that he hoped the updated ordinance would be available by the new year but no effective date yet has been established.
