CUBA – Crawford County R-2 Superintendent Scott Davidson on Oct. 28 said that the board will decide in December if it will approve an $8.5 million no tax increase bond issue that would improve the district’s facilities. LJ Hart & Company, the district’s bonding council, provided the language for the bond levy, which was originally proposed at $7.9 million.
Davidson said the proposed bond increased due to the rising cost of construction and supplies.
“Just knowing there’s always additional cost with construction added $600,000 in there,” Davidson said. “They’re getting hit with price increases for the cost of supplies, with the tariffs, and some things are high. Sometimes they’re low. There’s really no rhyme or reason for the increase.”
Davidson said the capital improvements bond would help with renovations and updates at the school’s facilities. If passed, the bond wouldn’t go into effect until April 2026, but with pre-filing bills due in December, legislators are actively at work drafting 2026 legislatures.
The name of the bond is currently being workshopped. Potential names proposed by Davidson were “Proposition Wildcats,” “Proposition Kids,” “Proposition Building Education,” and “Proposition Key to Schools.”
Board President Jennifer Moreland said that the bond would address common maintenance at the schools like one normally would for their home.
“It’s just to make sure that our district is functioning well,” Moreland said. “Just like you have to do maintenance at your house, you have to do maintenance at the school.”
Board members were encouraged to review all of the details of the bond in the next couple months in preparation for the December vote.
The next school board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Nov. 20 at the Cuba Central Office.
