Steven R. Volner, 30, was arrested at 3:13 p.m. on Dec. 20 in connection with a stabbing and slashing incident in Crawford County that led to a felony charge.

Deputies were dispatched at 6:27 p.m. on Dec. 19 to the Highway TT area near Steelville. The adult male victim was transported by emergency medical personnel to a St. Louis area hospital for further treatment.

Before being transported to the hospital, according to the Probable Cause Statement provided by Deputy Jeremiah Ward, the victim “advised he had been assaulted with a box-cutter knife by Steven Ryan Volner.”

Ward located the suspected scene of the incident located at the rear driveway of the property.

“I observed a black knit hat on the ground near a black electronics charging cable that appeared to have suspected blood on it,” Ward said. “These items were located adjacent to a suspected tire mark in the driveway. I observed a trail of more suspected blood leading away from the hat and charging cable, to an exterior basement door to the residence.”

The blood trail was observed through the basement door, into the basement and up a staircase that led to the kitchen area. It ended in the living room area where the victim was being treated.

EMS personnel who were at the scene said that the victim “sustained a laceration to the head with heavy bleeding and lacerations to both wrists.”

Volner had fled the scene before the deputies arrived. When arrested by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, his clothes were seized and checked, which led to the retrieval of a suspected blood sample from his footwear. Volner was charged with a class D felony second-degree assault and armed criminal action. He is currently being held at the Crawford County Detention Center without bond.

A confined docket hearing was held on Dec. 22 where Volner appeared via video and requested a bond change, which was denied.

Volner is due back in Judge Patrick Horsefield’s 42nd Circuit Court at 11 a.m. on Dec. 29 for a bond hearing and at 9 a.m. on Jan. 8 for a counsel status hearing.
