Crawford County man charged with drug trafficking, felony arrest

Posted

Brandon Woods, 34, of Leasburg, was arrested on Jan. 14 on charges, alleging second-degree drug trafficking, class B felony, tampering with physical evidence in felony persecution, a class E felony, and a class B misdemeanor for failure to register his motor vehicle.

Sgt. Joseph Cochran, of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, wrote the probable cause statement.

“At approximately (8 p.m.), I was in the Leasburg area on Highway H when I observed a white Mazda passenger vehicle with Illinois registration, traveling south,” Cochran wrote. “I also know the defendant to operate the vehicle that I had arrested him in the same vehicle a few days prior.”

According to his probable cause statement, the sergeant said he observed the subject items out the window, including a powdery substance and capsules.

“The vehicle came to a stop on Highway MM,” Cochran said.

Woods said he threw trash out the window, but Cochran observed a powdery substance all over Woods’ pants. Based on prior encounters with Woods, he believed the substance to be fentanyl.

Discarded on the roadway, deputies were able to recover 24 capsules, either full or partially full of what appeared to be fentanyl. After Woods was read his Miranda Rights, he admitted that the capsules did, in fact, contain fentanyl.

A field test verified that the contents of the capsules contained fentanyl.

“The total amount in all capsules is estimated to exceed 20 milligrams,” Cochran said.

Woods also had a prior conviction for possession of a controlled substance on July 23, 2013, in Franklin County.

He is being held at the Crawford County Detention Center with no bond.

He waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Feb. 5, and is scheduled to appear at 1 p.m. on Feb. 9 before Judge Michael Randazzo’s 42nd Circuit Court in Crawford County.
