Cuba, Bourbon basketball players earn All-GVC honors

This year’s Gasconade Valley Conference All-Conference (GVC) basketball selections have been announced, which were voted on by coaches in the conference.

Wildcats Cameron Carnal and Braden Gipson and Warhawk Dawson King were named to the All-GVC boys’ team. Belle senior Hank Stratman and Steelville senior Malakai Bruno were named co-most valuable players of the GVC.

Carnal, who completed his senior season for Cuba, averaged 10.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game and added 32 steals and 10 blocked shots to his steady stat line. Carnal is Cuba’s lone player to dunk this past season, and he threw down multiple rim-rattling slams that continuously brought the crowd in Mike Voigt Gymnasium to their feet.

Gipson, who has started for Cuba since he was a freshman, ascended from a pass-first point guard in his first two seasons to the team’s leading scorer in his junior season. He led the Wildcats with 16.3 points, 2.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game and knocked down a team-high 72 three-pointers on the season. Gipson’s 72 treys were six shy of Cuba’s all-time record of 78 three-pointers in a season. He netted 424 points this past season and currently sits at 677 points in his high school career. With a strong senior season, Gipson should surpass the illustrious 1,000 point scoring mark next winter. He is also expected to be named to the All-District team and All-Media teams when they’re announced in the upcoming weeks.

King took a leap from scoring less than two-points per game in his freshman season, to averaging nearly 10 points per game while showcasing his three-point shooting in his sophomore year. King was one of the bright spots for the 1-26 Warhawks, leading the team in points, three-pointers, assists and steals. He is expected to be Bourbon’s go-to-guy in his upcoming junior year.

Other members of the All-GVC included Steelville’s Jackson Woods, Hunter Starbeck and Nate Gambill and Belle’s Garrett Gehlert, Kooper Elrod and Hank Willis.

On the girl’s side, Belle senior Anastyn Lansford was named the GVC’s most valuable player.

Cuba’s junior trio of Mya Garbo, Jaylen Haffer and Leah Schmidt were named to the All-GVC team along with Bourbon senior Kaitlyn King and sophomore Kinzii Withorn.

Schmidt led the Lady Cats with 14.2 points per game while adding 3.2 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.5 steals a game.

Garbo finished with averages of 13.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

Haffer netted 11 points per game and registered team-highs of 9.2 rebounds, 3.6 rebounds and 4.4 steals a game.

King finished her final season for Bourbon averaging 5.8 points, 4.9 rebounds while logging team-highs of 3.4 assists, 2.8 steals and one block per game. Withorn tallied a team-high 10.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game to go along with 2.3 steals in her strong sophomore season.

Other players named to the All-GVC girls’ team included Belle’s Aubrey Rehmert and Natalie Lansford and Steelville’s junior duo of Jazmyn Hurd and Emeri Perkins.
