Bourbon Middle School’s track and field athletes had their final meet of the year on May 4 in the Cuba Middle School Invitational. After hosting and competing in the meet, Cuba participated in the Union Middle School Relays on May 7 for its last meet of the season.
Cuba Invitational
The scores in the Cuba Invitational were separated between the large and small schools participating. Cuba’s boys took fourth place out of nine small schools and the Lady Cats finished in sixth. Bourbon’s teams were both standouts, as the Warhawks finished in second place and the Lady Warhawks won first place.
Cuba seventh grader Elsie Rutz was a standout runner in the 800 and 1600 meter races. Rutz took second place in the 1600 with a 6:11.19 time and finished in fifth place in the 800m after crossing the finish line in 2:56.59.
Lady Wildcat eighth-grader Madelynn Myers was Cuba’s only other top-10 finisher, earning ninth place in the triple jump with a 7.26 meter leap. Claire Echols finished right behind Myers, taking 10th place with a 7.04 meter hop.
Maddison Bonney finished in 16th place in the 100 meter dash with a 15.82 time and Emma Asher took 21st in the 100m with a 16.84 finish. Asher also competed in the shot put competition, earning 11th place with a 7.85 meter heave.
Kinley Brinkman competed in the 200 meter dash and in the shot put event. She ran the 200m in 38.39 to earn 23rd place and hoisted the shot put 7.60 meters to finish in 13th.
Charli McInnis took 19th in the 200 meter dash after crossing the finish line in 35.26 seconds and Makayla Heads finished in 23rd in the long jump event with a 2.51 meter leap to round out the Lady Wildcat performances.
Bourbon’s girls were led by third-place finishes from seventh-grader Eva Wertich and eighth-grader Abby Payne. Wertich took third in the 1600 meter race with a 6:25.85 finish and Payne earned third place in the triple jump with a 8.38 meter leap. Payne also finished in ninth place in the long jump competition with a 3.72 meter hop.
Amiyah Vineyard earned fifth place in the high jump event with a 1.30 meter leap. She also finished in 10th place in the 200 meter dash with a 31.84 second finish.
Alaina Evans and Sophia Wasson competed in the 800 meter race, earning eighth and 11th place with 3:10.23 and 3:21.00 finishes, respectively.
Auria Williams ran the 100 meter hurdles in 20.82 seconds to finish in eighth place and completed the 400 meter race in 1:14.92 to take 10th place.
Isabella Haar earned 15th place in the 100 meter dash with a 15.79 time and Mina Williams ran the 200 meter dash in 39.39 seconds to finish in 25th.
Lucy Cain threw the discus 12.62 meters to take 14th place and tossed the shot put 6.94 meters to finish in 21st.
Abbi Downing leapt 1.20 meters in the high jump to earn 10th place, Lucy Biles finished in 19th in the long jump with a 3.08 meter hop and Sadie Sadler bounded 6.87 meters in the triple jump to finish in 12th place.
Eighth-graders Ayden Mabe and Trenton Humphrey each posted fourth-place finishes to lead the Wildcats.
Mabe took fourth place in the high jump with a 1.50 meter leap and Humphrey finished in fourth in the pole vault competition after hoisting himself over the 2.25 meter bar.
Mabe also finished in sixth place in the triple jump event with a 9.06 leap and took 10th place in the 100 meter dash with a 13.42 finish. Humphrey competed in the long jump event as well, earning 15th place with a 3.96 meter hop.
Cole Elsey took fifth place in the 400 meter race with a 1:01:18 finish and placed 19th in the discus competition with a 19.66 meter toss.
Ryan Ray earned seventh place in the 800 meter race after crossing the finish line in 2:39.57 and Spencer Walker took seventh place in the high jump event with a 1.45 meter leap.
Ryan Richards finished in 15th place in the 100 meter dash and in 16th in the 200 meter dash with 14.49 and 30.08 second finishes, respectively. Levi Stringer ran the 200 meter dash in 29.70 seconds to take 14th place and Gage Baker ran the 400 meter race in 1:06.21 to earn 12th place.
Cooper Evans finished in 13th place in the 1600 meter race after crossing the finish line in 7:57.68 and Emory Bast took 11th place in the discus competition with a 23.84 meter toss. Bast also finished in 12th place in the shot put competition after heaving it 7.95 meters.
Eighth-grader Konnor Rebura earned seventh place in the pole vault competition after summiting over the 2.10 meter bar and Oliver Scharfenberg took 13th place in the long jump after leaping 4.07 meters.
The Wildcats also earned a pair of second-place finishes in the 4x200 and 4x400 relay races. Scharfenberg, Tristan Cross and Noah Shores were a part of both teams, Walker ran in the 4x200 and Elsey competed on the 4x400 team.
Bourbon eighth-graders Elijah Frederick, Joshua Gibbs and Nick Woods were all standout performers in multiple events. Frederick finished in second place in the 1600 meter race and in third place in the 800 meter. He set a meet record in the 1600 meter after running a personal-best time of 4:55.28 and crossed the finish line in the 800 meter race in 2:16.04.
Gibbs earned third place in the 100 meter hurdles, seventh place in the 400 meter and eighth place in the 200 meter. He ran the hurdles in 17.17, completed the 400 meter in 1:01.68 before finishing the 200 meters in 27.79 seconds.
Woods was stellar in the field events, taking second place in the discus throw and third place in the shot put and high jump events. He tossed the discus 32.65 meters, heaved the shot put 10.66 meters and leapt 1.55 meters in the high jump.
Gunner Graddy and Van Kitchens ran the 100 meter dash, earning 19th and 23th with 15.46 and 19.69 second finishes, respectively. Justin Evans ran the 200 and 400 meter races, earning 22nd and 20th after crossing the finish lines in 34.52 and 1:15.22.
Blake Wallis ran the 800 meter in 2:47.86 to take eighth place and Brody Delmont ran the 1600 meter in 6:23.77. Carson Bullock competed in the discus and shot put events, earning 17th in the discus and fifth in the shot put with 20.28 meter and 10.06 meter heaves, respectively. Hayden Brueckner and Nolan Brunnerson participated in the long jump, taking 19th and 23rd with 10.66 and 10.06 meter leaps, respectively.
Bourbon’s 4x800 relay team of Frederick, Woods, Wallis and Delmont combined to finish in first place with a 10:06.73 time.
Union Middle School Relays
Cuba’s seventh- and eighth-grade girls each finished in ninth place and the Wildcat’s eighth-grade boys team took eighth place.
Rutz was the only top-three individual finisher for either of Cuba’s teams, as the speedy seventh-grader earned third place in the 1600 meter race with a 6:18.89 finishing time.
The Wildcats’ boys 4x100 relay team of Shores, Walker, Cross and Scharfenberg set the Cuba Middle School record with a 50.11 time, earning them second place in the meet.
