Cuba City Council had an intense discussion on Oct. 7 regarding a $500,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund (LCWF) grant, with one alderman contesting acceptance of the monies.
Alderman Pitts Lesesne did not approve of previous LCWF fund discussions. He mentioned in previous conversations that the grant was going to be used to build three pickleball courts and two basketball courts, then the discussions moved to four pickleball courts and two parking lots.
New deliberation at the meeting was to approve building two parking lots and a pavilion. Lesesne felt the discussion was moving in the wrong direction because of the lack of basketball courts.
“Teenagers have nothing to do in this town,” said Lesense.
Alderman Joyce Hartzell told Lesesne that the park was for all ages.
Mayor Kevin Copland mentioned a potential donor for the parks and projects. Lesense expressed concerns that approving the grant would put the city into $272,000 worth of debt. “There is no such thing as a magic donor,” said Lesense, addressing Copland’s potential donor.
Aldermen approved the grant for Tangle Creek Park with a vote of 3-1, with Lesense against, to build the two parking lots and a pavilion.
