Cuba R-2 District superintendent Scott Davidson updated the school board in its June 17 meeting about the upcoming renovations coming to campus thanks to the recently passed bond, Proposition K.I.D.S., in the April 23 election.
Davidson said that he met with the board’s approved architect and contractors along with Matt Nigh, senior project manager at Navigate Building Solutions, this past week to give a tour of the buildings and renovation areas for the upcoming projects. He noted that while the majority of the renovations will come in the summer of 2027, they have a few projects that will get underway in the upcoming weeks.
Work is scheduled to begin as early as this week with the installation of new lighting at Steve Schuette Softball Field, Paul Bryan Baseball Field and at the Wildcat Field of Pride football stadium. Once summer school concludes on June 26, crews will transition to the elementary school playground and fencing improvements in July, bringing immediate visible progress to campus for the upcoming school year.
“I’m pretty excited that our ball field lights will get started on next week, and then in July our playground will get started on, and then the fencing out there as well,” Davidson said. “And then the architects are planning to have everything drawn up by December, and then that way we can go out and bid for all the other projects. The majority of them will be done in the summer of 27, so I’m pretty excited.”
In other news, Tess Green, Cuba Elementary School principal, said that summer school is going well and her staff has begun planning for next school year.
“Summer school’s going well, having lots of fun,” Green said. “I was just making my rounds into classrooms, and saw that these kids are doing a lot of hands-on learning. We had a quick kind of turnover, but we’re very thankful that for the most part we’re fully staffed, and we’re starting to plan for the next school year. We’ve been able to get a lot done this month.”
Green added that the Fire Department is planning on bringing a fire truck to campus on the last day of summer school to give students a tour of the truck and provide summer water activities.
