Cuba Parks, recreation officials address concerns with council

Posted

Cuba Parks and Recreation officials told city officials they feel like the city is not allowing them to function properly.

President Cyndi Mercer and Treasurer Dan Eidson, with Cuba Parks and Recreation, on Oct. 7, requested that the city give them permission to make their department the liaison for the community sports programs. Eidson addressed the council’s mixed comments about the city organizing the sports programs.

“If you want to be involved with that, then get involved,” Eidson said. “But if you don’t, then let’s not try to get involved and tell people who they can and can’t have as far as vendors go.”

“I was told by someone that the parks and rec board does not act as the liaison on the facility; that is completely false,” said Mercer. She added that while some municipalities, such as Owensville and Washington, have consolidated park boards with the municipal board, Cuba’s council has not.

Mercer said she feels the parks and recreation department has been stonewalled by the council, despite its decisions being determined by a committee.

“Your parks and rec board committee is your oversight committee for your pool, with your pool manager, your recreational programs, which include soccer, baseball, and football,” said Mercer. “We are your parks and rec board. I don’t understand it. We’re so worried about control that we have lost control as a city.”

Council members did not respond to the comments. The council didn’t comment, and no action was taken.
