Cuba High School’s softball team braved the high temperatures in the area for a Sept. 1 game against Pacific but received some relief the following evening when its game versus Lebanon was postponed.
The Crawford County R-2 District announced in a Facebook post that, “The softball game for tonight has been postponed to 9/16. This is due to high temperatures and wanting to retain JV games.”
During its lone varsity game of the week against Pacific, The Lady Wildcats lost 18-0 in three innings of action and are now 0-2 on the season. Addison Lowes, Cuba’s freshman second baseman, recorded the lone base hit for the Lady Cats and stole a base. Fellow freshman Harper Maxwell threw 104 pitches and hurled all three innings in the loss. Pacific had four players record three hits and sophomore Myla Miller struck out six hitters in three innings of work on 38 pitches.
The Lady Wildcats had a week off before they hosted Richland on Sept. 8, which will be detailed in next week’s edition. Cuba will play Sept. 10 in Sullivan, Sept. 14 in St. James before hosting Jefferson on Sept. 15 and Lebanon on Sept. 16 in its make up game.
Cuba’s junior varsity team, which sports many of its varsity players on its young roster, lost 31-13 in a six inning scoring explosion that resembled the score of a football game.
Maxwell went 4-for-4 out of the lead off spot for the Lady Cats, scoring three times, stealing two bases and driving in one run. Emma Baker, Eliza Ledbetter and Adreana Valadez each added base hits for Cuba, who drew 13 walks as a team and stole a whopping 25 bases.
Savanna Vass swiped five, Jaci Sanders had four steals and Brookelynn Tiner, Kelsey McGinnis and Kaylee Whitworth each stole three to lead the JV Lady Cats on the base paths.
Freshman Akadia Sanazaro started on the mound and threw 2 2/3 innings, tallying three strikeouts. Ledbetter came on in relief and pitched the final 2 1/3 innings. Cuba’s junior varsity team is scheduled to play Sept. 10 against Sullivan, following the end of the 4:30 p.m. varsity matchup between the Lady Wildcats and Lady Eagles.
