Shelbie L. Adair of Cuba was arrested on Dec. 22 on a warrant out of Crawford County and charged with allegations of a class D felony count of stealing ($750 or more) and a class E felony of unlawfully receiving public assistance benefits/EBT card (valued at $750 or more) for stealing $9,800.44 worth of benefits.
According to the Probable Cause Statement that was filed by Special Agent Michael Menning, Missouri Department of Social Services (DSS), dated Oct. 5, 2023, Adair is believed to have unlawfully obtained Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from April through October of 2020 and May 2022-June 2023 that she was not lawfully entitled or eligible to receive.
Menning alleges that Adair “willfully made false statements on the application” to receive benefits and “concealed information that the children’s father lived in the home and was employed,” resulting in the receipt of $9,800.44 of public assistance that she was not eligible to receive. Criminal charges are filed against her for “deciet and intent to deprive” by “knowlingly misrepresenting her household composition and income.”
Adair was served the arrest warrant on Dec. 22, with a $10,000 cash or surety bond as the court noted, “based on the individual circumstances of defendant and the case, reasonable grounds to believe defendant will not appear on summons or is a danger to the victim, the community or other person.”
A bond appearance hearing was scheduled on Dec. 22 in Judge Patrick J. Horsefield’s 42nd Circuit Court. Adair is ordered to appear again at 9 a.m. on Jan. 22 in Crawford County.
