Junior Eli Davis battled sloppy playing conditions throughout and finished 90th in the rain-delayed Missouri Class 3 State Tournament, held Monday and Tuesday, May 18-19 at the Sedalia Country Club.
Davis, the Tigers’ lone state qualifier, shot 40-over-par 83-97-180 during state competition.
It was the second straight year Davis has competed at the state tourney.
Monday’s first round was delayed until 3 p.m. due to rainy weather, but the field was able to get the full 18 holes in. More rain fell on Tuesday’s final round, and there was a rain delay until 12:30 p.m.
Harper Elliott of Springfield Catholic and Houston Tiefenbrunn of St. Francis Borgia tied for medalist honors, each shooting one-over 141.
Eldon won the Class 3 team championship with 596 while Blair Oaks was second with 598.
“On Monday Eli hit his driver well,” said St. James head coach Zane Garr. “His chipping and putting was the best I’ve seen from him all season. This led to several up and downs for him during the round.
“Tuesday was a struggle with the conditions and his ball striking, but he gained good experience and it will help coming into next season, with his goal to make the state tournament again.”
