Severe flash flooding in the middle of the night on July 10 dropped nearly a foot of rain on Crawford County, leaving catastrophic damage and flooding in the area.
According to the Crawford County Sheriff’s office, the flood claimed the life of 23-year-old Davisville resident Faith Gregory, who was swept away from her home and found nearly two miles downstream from her home by volunteers at about 11:30 a.m. on July 11 in the Huzzah Creek.
Gregory was swept away around 3:30 a.m. on July 10 after rising water from Huzzah Creek caused a wall of the home she shared with her boyfriend, Logan Ousley, to collapse in the unincorporated community of Davisville in southeastern Crawford County.
Gregory, Ousley and their four dogs reportedly attempted to reach safety by kayak. Ousley made it safely, but Gregory and the dogs were swept away by the rapid floodwaters. One of the dogs was later found alive about 8 miles from the couple’s home. Three others remained missing as of July 13.
A search for Gregory ensued and members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, Steelville Fire Protection District, Quad County Fire Protection District, and the Crawford County Coroner responded to the scene to recover the victim.
In a statement on July 11, Crawford County Sheriff Darin. J Layman thanked first responders and other volunteers for dedicating numerous hours to the search after giving his condolences to Gregory’s family.
“This is not the outcome that any of us were hoping for. Our thoughts and prayers are with Faith’s family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss.
“The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office extends our sincere gratitude to the many volunteers, fire departments, law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, drone operators, and search personnel who dedicated countless hours to this search effort despite difficult and hazardous conditions. Your professionalism, teamwork, and commitment to serving others made an incredible difference throughout this operation.
“We also want to express our heartfelt appreciation to the members of our community who generously brought food, water, and other refreshments to the scene for first responders. Your kindness and support during a difficult time were deeply appreciated by everyone involved.
While this search has come to a heartbreaking conclusion, it once again demonstrated the strength of our community and the willingness of so many to come together in a time of need.”
Gregory’s family posted a donation link listed below to cover funeral expenses. Wilson Mortuary will be handing the funeral service and can be reached at 573-729-5555. It’s encouraged to let them know you are donating to Faith Gregory’s service. A funeral date and time hasn’t been set as of July 13.
A joint Facebook post among family members reads: “There WILL NOT BE ANY GO FUND ME MADE FOR FAITH BY FAMILY. We do not want to do any of that. We want everyone’s money going directly towards Faith’s service, not for fees.” (https://everloved.com/life-of/faith-gregory/donate/).
