George Franklin Hughes

George Franklin Hughes of Rolla, Missouri was born on May 14, 1935 to Louis Jr. and Ollie Rae Hughes and passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 2025 at the age of 90 years.

He married Rosemary Oberkrom on Dec. 27, 1958.

George served his country in the United States Army from 1958-1960.

After returning home to Rolla, he resumed his work at Callens Market, where he had been employed prior to his military service. He worked there for more than 40 years, always ready to help customers with the flowers and vegetable plants.

He loved to fish, especially in the rivers and streams of the area. He was also a sports fan who enjoyed watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball on television. Each year during his vacation, he made it a point to take his family to a home game. George also loved basketball and attended many Rolla Bulldogs games over the years.

George spent countless hours working in his yard—mowing, trimming trees and shrubs and especially tending to his large garden. He also enjoyed picking blackberries and spending time outside whenever he could.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Louis, Don and Audrey Hughes; sisters, Edith Hughes and Karen Rodgers; and daughter-in-law, Lois Hughes.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rosemary Hughes of the home; children, Terry Hughes of St. James, Missouri, Tammy Baker of Rolla, Missouri and Hope (Darrell) Jones of Rolla, Missouri; grandchildren, Casey (Caleb) Light, Randy (Keagan) Hughes, Erin (Nick) Kveton, Jared Baker, Wesley Baker, Andrew Jones and Tiffany Jones; brothers, Charles “Winston” Hughes and wife Betty of St. James, Missouri and Harold “Smiley” Hughes and wife Peggy of Rolla, Missouri; sisters, Alice Isgriggs, of Springfield, Missouri and Irene Taylor of Springfield, Missouri; sister-in-law, Artie Mae Hughes; great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Visitation was held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2025 at the Rolla Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla, Missouri.

Funeral services with full military honors were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2025 at the Rolla Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla, Missouri with Pastor Larry Richardson officiating.

Interment followed at Ozark Memorial Gardens.
